Govt won’t tolerate attacks on BJP workers: Tripura CM Saha

Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha has vowed that his BJP-led government won’t stand for attacks on party workers. He demanded justice for those behind a recent clash that injured four people, including a top BJP tribal leader.
The trouble erupted on Sunday in Hejamara, West Tripura district. Supporters of the Tipra Motha Party (TMP)—a key ally in Tripura’s coalition government—allegedly assaulted BJP members ahead of a Seva Pakhwada event. Among the victims was Mangal Debbarma, vice-president of BJP’s Janajati Morcha, the party’s tribal wing. A tribal journalist also got hurt in the scuffle.
Three of the injured ended up at GBP Government Medical College and Hospital for treatment. Saha, who handles the home portfolio, rushed to the hospital on Wednesday to meet the victims and chat with doctors about their care.
“This kind of political violence has no place in Tripura,” Saha said. He called the attack “brutal” and stressed that even though TMP is an alliance partner, his government will speak out against such incidents. “The law will handle this—police and courts are on it. We believe in peace, not fists or vandalism,” he added, referencing a BJP office that got trashed the day before.
Saha warned of a possible larger conspiracy behind these assaults. The BJP, he noted, focuses on development and unity, not chaos.
This isn’t the first time. Back on August 31, TMP supporters attacked seven BJP tribal workers in Asharambari, Khowai district, as they gathered to hear Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “Mann Ki Baat” radio show. Similar clashes hit Takarjala in Sepahijala district and other spots, leaving more BJP members injured.
Tripura’s tense coalition dynamics come amid rising calls for tribal rights, with TMP pushing hard for indigenous issues. As investigations continue, Saha urged calm and promised swift action to keep the peace.
