Guwahati, Oct 7 – The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) is launching a fresh wave of green projects across its network to hit the Indian Railways Green Mission 2030 targets.
At the heart of the effort, officials say, is a bold plan to turn Guwahati‑called‑Home station into India’s first station that recycles 100 % of its plastic waste.
“Partnering with the Assam Pollution Control Board and a local recycling firm, we’ve signed a tripartite MoU that draws on scientific expertise from IIT Guwahati,” said Kapinjal Kishore Sharma, NFR’s chief public relations officer.
The program weaves together science, regulation and on‑ground action. NFR now uses color‑coded bins for easy separation, bottle‑crushing machines, composting units, and QR‑code monitoring to track progress in real time.
IIT Guwahati has also developed compostable train bags that replace single‑use plastic, cutting waste at the source.
To rally passengers, vendors and staff, NFR stages “Waste‑to‑Art” exhibitions, street plays, Scouts‑and‑Guides drives, and digital campaigns at all stations. These outreach events have helped raise awareness and boost participation.
Sharma notes that vendor compliance sits at 100 %, while complaints about cleanliness have dropped 60 %. The station’s overall look and feel have improved markedly.
Buoyed by these results, NFR will replicate the 100 % recyclable model at nine more stations in the zone, aiming to make the entire Northeast Frontier Railway network cleaner, greener and more responsible.
NFR serves the northeastern states and extends into seven districts of West Bengal and five districts of north Bihar.
