Prashant Kishor, founder of Jan Suraaj, dismissed the hype around Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s latest GST reforms, saying they won’t do much for struggling states like Bihar. Speaking in Nalanda, Bihar, on Sunday, Kishor argued that these changes mainly help the rich while leaving everyday folks in poorer areas out in the cold.
“We’ve heard PM Modi’s speeches for 15 years now,” Kishor told . “Every time, it’s ‘tomorrow there will be change, tomorrow India will lead the world, tomorrow our problems will end.’ But so far, it’s all just talk.”
He pointed out that Bihar, one of India’s poorest states, won’t see real benefits from the GST tweaks. “GST reforms will only help people who already have money,” Kishor said. “Take the tax cut on cars—only 2 out of every 100 people in Bihar own one. So how does that help the majority here?”
Meanwhile, Congress leader Pawan Khera called Modi’s comments old news. “Was there anything new in what PM Modi said today?” Khera asked . “He announced this on August 15. We’ve been pushing for these changes since 2017.”
Khera slammed the government’s past moves, like demonetisation and the initial GST rollout, for crushing micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs). “MSMEs got wrecked by their own policies,” he said. He called for state-level GST control, so places like Bihar could set their own rates on liquor, petrol, and real estate to ease the burden.
Earlier, PM Modi addressed the nation, painting a brighter picture for the reforms set to kick off on September 22—the first day of Navratri. “From the sunrise on that day, India takes another big step toward Aatmanirbhar Bharat,” Modi said. He promised a nationwide “GST Bachat Utsav” that would bring savings and easier shopping for the poor, middle class, farmers, women, traders, and entrepreneurs.
The changes aim to simplify taxes and boost self-reliance, but critics like Kishor and Khera question if they’ll truly reach those who need it most in states like Bihar.
