Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has given a big thumbs-up to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the upcoming GST reforms kicking off on Monday. He called the changes a game-changer for everyday Indians, including the middle class, women, farmers, traders, and small shopkeepers. According to Shinde, these tweaks will spark more spending, ramp up production, and create jobs across the board.
“I congratulate Prime Minister Narendra Modi,” Shinde said in Mumbai. “The GST had four slabs before, but he slashed two of them, leaving just 5% and 18%. This is truly revolutionary for the common man and everyone else. It’s a masterstroke because it changes lives—daily essentials are now way cheaper. That’s why it’s such a huge win.”
Shinde even dubbed the GST reforms a “Diwali Dhamaka,” adding that no words of thanks could do justice to Modi’s move. He urged the opposition to get on board, pointing out that the decision benefits all 1.4 billion people in India.
In his nationwide address on Sunday, PM Modi explained that reforms like these keep evolving with India’s needs. “We’re rolling out these next-gen GST changes to match today’s demands and tomorrow’s goals,” Modi said. Under the new setup, the focus stays on just the 5% and 18% slabs, making most daily goods more wallet-friendly.
Modi highlighted how food items, medicines, soap, toothbrushes, toothpaste, and even health and life insurance will go tax-free or drop to a low 5% rate. Plus, nearly all products that used to carry a 12% tax—99% of them—now fall under that 5% bracket, easing the load on households and boosting the economy.
