Gujarat CM inaugurates ‘Matrushri Heeraba Sarovar’ on PM Modi’s birthday

Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel recently unveiled the Matrushri Heeraba Sarovar, a stunning new reservoir in Siddhpur’s Matrugaya Tirth. This special project honors the late Heeraba Modi, mother of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, right on his 75th birthday. It’s a touching tribute that brings water security closer to the people of North Gujarat.

The reservoir forms part of the ambitious Saraswati River rejuvenation programme, led by the state’s Narmada, Water Resources, Water Supply, and Kalpasar Department. The Dholaakia Foundation’s Fuliba Trust chipped in with key support to make it happen. As CM Patel cut the ribbon, he shared how Heeraba’s tough life—struggling for water in her early days—shaped young Narendra Modi. “Her resilience and dedication to service inspired him,” Patel said. “That’s why, as Gujarat’s leader back then, Modi worked tirelessly to end water scarcity in North Gujarat and across the state.”

Patel praised PM Modi’s vision, calling water the “touchstone of development.” Under his guidance, Gujarat built check dams, revived rivers, and launched irrigation projects that now provide clean drinking water and boost farming everywhere. This new reservoir alone will irrigate over 150 hectares of farmland, recharge more than 20 wells, and stop soil erosion near the Madhupawadiya check dam. Plus, it can hold over 450 lakh cubic feet of water, helping raise groundwater levels and fight drought in the area.

Joining the celebrations were Industry Minister Balvantsinh Rajput and Water Resources Minister Kunvarji Bavaliya. They hailed the inauguration as a historic moment, perfectly timed with PM Modi’s birthday. Rajput looked back to 2005, when Modi, as CM, spearheaded the Saraswati-Sabarmati-Narmada river linkage in Siddhpur. “It was like the legendary Bhagirath bringing the Ganga to earth,” he said, crediting it for transforming North Gujarat’s water scene.

Bavaliya pointed out how Gujarat, once hit hard by droughts, has become a national leader in water management. Thanks to Modi’s push for drip irrigation, smart use of Narmada waters, canal networks, farm ponds, and regular desilting, the state now thrives. The event drew a big crowd, including Tourism Minister Mulubhai Bera, MP Bharat Singh Dabhi, MLA Lavingji Thakor, top officials, trustees, and locals from Siddhpur and nearby villages. It was a day of pride, showing how personal inspiration can lead to real change for communities.
