Gujarat: Gandhinagar administration launches massive demolition drive, targets over 700 illegal structures

Massive Demolition Drive Clears Illegal Encroachments in Gandhinagar

Gandhinagar, Gujarat, woke up to a major cleanup operation on Wednesday morning. The district administration teamed up with local police to bulldoze over 700 illegal structures built on government land. This anti-encroachment drive targeted spots like GEB, Pethapur, Charedi, and the Sabarmati River banks, covering a whopping one lakh square meters.

Gandhinagar SP Ravi Teja Vasamshetty shared updates on the drive. "We’ve kicked off this effort to free up one lakh square meters of encroached land," he said. So far, teams have demolished 100 structures, with plans to take down 600 more in the next few days. The reclaimed land? It’s worth around Rs 1,000 crore in market value. To make it happen, over 700 police officers, 20 admin teams, and 20 JCB machines rolled into action early today.

This isn’t Gujarat’s first big push against illegal encroachments. Back in May, Ahmedabad saw a huge second-phase demolition that cleared more than 2.5 lakh square meters of unauthorized buildings. Joint CP Sharad Singhal explained how it went down. "In the first phase, we removed encroachments from about 1.5 lakh square meters with solid law and order setups," he told on May 20. "The second phase started smoothly today, with plenty of police on site, senior officers overseeing, and even public support coming in."

The crackdown doesn’t stop there. On May 19, Rajkot police smashed 60 illegal constructions owned by 38 repeat offenders involved in serious crimes like murder, attempted murder, and robbery. This move followed strict orders from Gujarat Home Minister Harsh Sanghavi and the DGP to target such criminals grabbing government land.

Sanghavi has been clear on the state’s stance. "Our government and police won’t tolerate anyone illegally occupying public land while running criminal rackets," he said earlier. These drives show Gujarat’s ongoing fight to reclaim valuable government property and keep cities encroachment-free.
