“Gujarat model is clear – bulldozers for Dalits, backward classes, and the poor”: Rahul Gandhi

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi fired sharp criticism at India’s ruling BJP government on Wednesday, calling out what he described as the “Gujarat model” of favoring billionaires over the poor. In a post on X, formerly Twitter, Gandhi accused authorities of using bulldozers to demolish homes of Dalits, backward classes, and low-income families while handing thousands of acres of land—and even national assets—to tycoons like Gautam Adani for free or next to nothing.
Gandhi pointed to a recent incident in the Petapur slum of Gandhinagar, Gujarat, where more than 400 families lost their homes in a demolition drive. He claimed these residents had solid proof of their legitimacy, including electricity bills, tax receipts, ration cards, Aadhaar cards, and voter IDs. The post included a video highlighting the destruction. (Check it out here: https://x.com/RahulGandhi/status/1970794759112503646)
As the Leader of the Opposition in India’s Lok Sabha, Gandhi raised alarms about similar bulldozer actions popping up across the country, including in Delhi. “Not just in Gujarat, but in Delhi and other parts of the country, such demolition incidents are continuously coming to light,” he wrote. He added that in cases like Gandhinagar, courts had even issued stay orders to halt the demolitions, yet they went ahead anyway.
Gandhi didn’t hold back on his broader charges against the BJP. “The BJP clearly knows they cannot form a government through the real mandate of the people; their government is formed through theft and by capturing institutions,” he said. He alleged the party strips rights from the poor to benefit a handful of billionaire allies, essentially looting the nation’s resources.
But Gandhi vowed to fight back. “Indian democracy is for the rights of the people, and it will run for them. We will not let the BJP and its friends steal from the country,” he asserted.
This comes after the Gandhinagar District Administration, working with local police, carried out a major crackdown earlier this month. They targeted illegal encroachments in areas like GEB, Pethapur, Charedi, and along the Sabarmati River banks, aiming to clear urban spaces in Gujarat.
