Gandhinagar, Gujarat – A speeding car hit two scooter riders near the busy G Circle in the Infocity area, leaving both rider injured. The crash happened on Sunday evening. Police say the vehicle was driven by a woman named Jyoti Rai. She reportedly drove into the scooters that had come from the wrong side of the road. Witnesses said the impact was hard and threw both riders off their scooters.
The injured riders were taken straight to a nearby hospital and are receiving treatment. The driver suffered only minor injuries. After the crash, she slipped away from the site, but later that night she turned herself in at the Infocity police station. Police have now detained her and are filing charges under the Motor Vehicles Act.
Residents in the area have long worried about traffic accidents at G Circle, a junction known for speeding and traffic violations. “Even though accidents happen over and over again, there’s no strict speed enforcement,” said one daily commuter.
Gujarat’s transport department released data showing that in 2023 the state recorded 16,349 road accidents that led to 7,854 deaths. From 2018 to 2022, the state saw 80,150 accidents and 36,626 fatalities. Overspeeding alone accounted for more than 83 % of the deaths, with other factors such as neglecting helmets, driving without a license, and overweight vehicles also playing a role.
Police are investigating the precise chain of events to assign responsibility and determine the cause of the crash. The incident adds to the growing list of road safety concerns in Gujarat’s bustling capital.
