Gandhinagar is gearing up for a vibrant event to celebrate World Ozone Day on September 16, 2024. The Gujarat Council on Science and Technology (GUJCOST), part of the state’s Department of Science and Technology, is hosting a special awareness programme at the Government Science College in Sector-15. Over 200 students will join in, learning all about protecting the ozone layer and building a greener future.

This day honors the 1987 Montreal Protocol, the global agreement that tackled ozone-depleting chemicals like CFCs. Thanks to it, we’ve made huge strides in saving our planet’s protective shield against harmful UV rays.

The fun kicks off at 9:30 a.m. with engaging talks, expert sessions, and hands-on activities. Attendees will dive into the ozone layer’s vital role in keeping our climate stable and pick up tips on eco-friendly habits to fight ozone depletion.

You’ll hear from top experts like Dr. D.P. Patel, Principal of Government Science College, Gandhinagar; Dr. Sanjay Thakkar from M.N. Shukla College, Ahmedabad; Dr. S. Ramachandran, a senior scientist at Physical Research Laboratory, Ahmedabad; and Dr. Narottam Sahoo, Advisor and Member Secretary of GUJCOST.

To keep things lively, students from M.N. Shukla College will stage a creative play called “Hole Story,” which spotlights the causes and effects of ozone layer damage. There’s also an exciting Ozone Awareness Quiz to test your knowledge.

The day wraps up with everyone taking an “Ozone Pledge” – a promise to cut down on harmful substances, embrace sustainable practices, and spread the word in their neighborhoods.

For even broader reach, GUJCOST will live-stream the entire event to District Community Science Centres across Gujarat and partner science councils in other parts of India. It’s a smart way to inspire more people about environmental protection.

GUJCOST plays a key role in boosting science and technology in Gujarat. As the go-to agency under the Department of Science and Technology, it advises on policies, runs science centres, and sparks interest through programmes like this. They fund research, back innovations, push STEM education, and tackle big topics from space science to health and the environment.

By connecting schools, innovators, and government teams, GUJCOST helps turn science into real progress for education, growth, and sustainability in the state. If you’re passionate about ozone layer protection or World Ozone Day events in Gujarat, this programme is a must-watch for building a healthier planet.
