Gandhinagar, Gujarat – The 71st convocation of Gujarat Vidyapith, the university founded by Mahatma Gandhi, took place on October 10 at the campus’s main auditorium. President Droupadi Murmu presided over the ceremony, while Governor Acharya Devvrat and Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel also appeared on stage.
A total of 713 students earned their degrees across 18 departments and seven faculties. For the first time, the university awarded gold medals to students who excelled academically and in social service projects, a move that the president praised as “a fitting tribute to the values of the freedom struggle.”
President Murmu’s address highlighted Gujarat Vidyapith’s 105‑year legacy. She recalled that the campus was set up in 1920 during the Non‑Cooperation Movement and that Mahatma Gandhi himself served as its first chancellor. “The institution was built with the people’s resources and remains a symbol of nation‑building and self‑reliance,” she said. The president also urged graduates to champion Swadeshi—promoting locally made goods—and to keep the spirit of “nation first” alive.
Governor Devvrat spoke about the university’s purpose beyond academics. He noted that Gandhi founded Gujarat Vidyapith to free India from the mentality of slavery, “through truth, non‑violence, and Indian values.” He called the convocation a stepping‑stone for graduates to use their knowledge for society’s benefit, encouraging them to keep learning as their primary goal.
Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel praised the event as a moment of national pride. He reminded attendees that the institution was created to inspire youth in the struggle for independence and to build a self‑reliant, developed India. “Today’s graduates are not only scholars but also custodians of Gandhi’s values of truth, non‑violence and self‑dependence,” he said.
The university’s director, Vice‑Chancellor Harshad Patel, welcomed the students and highlighted the school’s successful implementation of the New Education Policy. He emphasized initiatives that foster Swadeshi spirit and self‑reliance, encouraging graduates to carry these ideals into their future careers.
The day concluded with the president thanking the faculty and the state’s officials for their support. As she left the campus, the governor and the chief minister bid her farewell at Ahmedabad airport, while other officials, including the minister of protocol and the city mayor, joined in the send‑off.
The convocation marked a historic moment for Gujarat Vidyapith and its students, many of whom celebrated the union of academic achievement and the enduring legacy of the nation’s first president and freedom fighter.
