In a big win for regional politics in Assam, the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF), led by Hagrama Mohilary, swept the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) elections. They grabbed 28 out of 40 seats, paving the way to form the next council and boosting their influence in the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR).
The Assam State Election Commission announced the results on Saturday, showing clear dominance for BPF. The United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL), headed by Pramod Boro, picked up 7 seats, while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured 5. The Congress party drew a blank, failing to win even one seat in this key BTC poll.
Voting happened across the BTR on September 22, with vote counting kicking off under tight security on Friday, September 26. The elections covered five districts—Kokrajhar, Chirang, Udalguri, Baksa, and Tamulpur—where 316 candidates vied for power. In Kokrajhar alone, home to 12 BTC constituencies, 100 hopefuls jumped into the fray.
Of the 40 seats, 30 are reserved for Scheduled Tribes (ST), five for non-ST candidates, and five remain unreserved. Around 2.66 million voters turned out at 3,279 polling stations, making this the fifth general election for the BTC since its setup.
Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Sushmita Dev called the outcome a strong rejection of the BJP-led Assam government. “The BTC results send a clear message against divisive politics in the state,” she said. Dev also thanked TMC supporters, candidates, and workers for their efforts in the party’s first push in the region.
This marks a shift from the last BTC election, where UPPL and BJP teamed up to run the council. A top BPF leader now expects the new council members to take oath in Kokrajhar on October 3, kicking off fresh leadership in Bodoland’s governance. With these BTC election results, eyes are on how this could stir up broader changes in Assam politics.
