A senior Indian Police Service officer from Haryana, Y Puran Kumar, died by suicide on Tuesday at his home in Chandigarh. The news shocked the police community and led to an outpouring of sympathy from the IPS Officers Association of Haryana Cadre. The association’s leaders, including Hardeep Singh Doon, ADGP (Telecom, Highways and Traffic), visited his wife, IAS officer Amneet P Kumar, to hand over condolences and call for peace for his soul.
The association also observed a two‑minute silence in his memory, stressing that it will stand with his family during this painful time. The sudden death highlights the mental health pressures faced by law enforcement officers.
In response, Chandigarh Police set up a six‑member Special Investigation Team (SIT) the same day. The SIT will work under IGP Pushpendra Kumar, UT Chandigarh, to examine the circumstances of Y Puran Kumar’s death. The investigation covers sections 108/3(5) of the Criminal Procedure Code and section 3(1)(r) of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. Officers can bring in extra experts if needed to gather evidence, interview witnesses, and produce the final report.
Simultaneously, the police lodged an FIR against Haryana’s Director General of Police, Shatrujeet Singh Kapur, and Rohtak Superintendent of Police, Narendra Bijarniya. The complaint came from Amneet P Kumar, who alleges misconduct may be linked to her husband’s death.
The situation has drawn attention to the need for better support systems for police officers and the importance of thorough investigations when a high‑ranking officer’s life ends under suspicious circumstances.
