Heavy Rain Alert: Tamil Nadu Braces for Showers in 12 Districts

Chennai is set to see some action from the skies today! The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted heavy rainfall in 12 districts of Tamil Nadu, thanks to a new low-pressure area forming over the southern peninsula. This weather system promises widespread showers, thunderstorms, and gusty winds across the state, making it a rainy Wednesday for many.

According to the latest IMD forecast, heavy rain could hit one or two spots in the hilly areas of Coimbatore, Nilgiris, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Ranipet, Tiruvannamalai, Kallakurichi, Salem, Dharmapuri, Erode, Theni, and Dindigul. Expect light to moderate rains with thunder and lightning in many parts of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal too. Winds could pick up to 30-40 kmph during these storms, which might knock down trees or damage weak structures—so stay cautious if you’re in those areas.

Officials are urging residents in vulnerable spots to keep an eye out and stay safe. For Chennai folks, look forward to a partly cloudy sky with possible light to moderate showers in some neighborhoods, especially in the evening or night. Thunderstorms aren’t off the table either. Temperatures will hover around a high of 35-36°C and a low of 28°C, so it won’t feel too chilly despite the rain.

Fishermen, take note: IMD has issued a strong warning not to head out to sea. Squally weather is brewing in the southwest and central Arabian Sea, parts of the southwest Bay of Bengal, Gulf of Mannar, nearby Kumari Sea, and along the southern Tamil Nadu coast. Rough seas and strong winds could spell trouble for boats and small vessels.

Weather experts say this rainfall fits right into the seasonal monsoon pattern, but the low-pressure system might crank up the intensity. Farmers in the western and southern districts are thrilled, as the rains could give a boost to their standing crops. On the flip side, city authorities need to gear up to tackle any waterlogging in urban areas.

With heavy showers on the horizon for Tamil Nadu districts, IMD advises everyone to check weather updates regularly and follow safety tips. Stay dry and safe out there!
