The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Chennai has issued a heavy‑rain warning for six districts in Tamil Nadu and for the Union Territory of Puducherry. A low‑pressure system over the Bay of Bengal is driving widespread showers and strong winds across the region.
Key cities that will see heavy rain today include Chennai, Chengalpattu, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Ranipet and Villupuram. The bulletin says rainy activity will sharpen on Monday, with “extremely heavy” rain possible over Chennai, Tiruvallur and Ranipet. Shallow showers are expected for Vellore, as well as for Puducherry.
The low‑pressure area is moving northwest, bringing moderate to heavy rain to northern coastal districts of Tamil Nadu and adjoining parts of Puducherry. Wind speeds now reach 80 km/h over the southwest, southeast and central Bay of Bengal, with the mid‑western and north‑western sectors seeing winds up to 100 km/h.
Officials urge fishermen to stay away from the sea because of squally winds. Coastal residents should watch for rough seas and prepare for possible flooding in low‑lying areas. Disaster‑management teams in the affected districts are on high alert and local administrations are taking precautionary steps.
The northeast monsoon has been active since October 16, and many parts of Tamil Nadu have already received above‑average rainfall this week. The RMC will issue further updates as the weather system develops.
