A new low‑pressure system has been forming over the Bay of Bengal, and the India Meteorological Department (IMD) says it will bring heavy rains to many districts in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry this weekend.
The IMD’s latest bulletin notes a cyclonic swirl in the southeast Bay of Bengal and the Andaman Sea that sparked a low‑pressure area by 5:30 a.m. Saturday. Experts warn that the system will push west‑northwest and could grow stronger over the next 48 hours.
Heavy rain expected Saturday
‑ Cuddalore
‑ Villupuram
‑ Chengalpattu
‑ Puducherry
The department also predicts light to moderate showers with thunderstorms in parts of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal on Sunday.
Key districts for next‑day weather
- Villupuram, Chengalpattu, Chennai, Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur, Ranipet and Puducherry may see heavy rain, and isolated spikes could flood urban areas.
- Tiruvallur, Chennai and Ranipet could get very heavy downpours, while Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram and Vellore will likely see heavy showers.
- Sivaganga district has already felt intense rain, with towns like Tirupathur, Singampunari and Karaikudi experiencing heavy floods that have left locals underwater.
Disaster management teams are on alert in the northern and central districts as extra monsoon rains loom. Fishermen have been told to stay away from the sea because the Bay of Bengal is expected to be rough.
With the northeast monsoon picking up speed, weather experts say the rains will intensify over the next few days. This could bring much-needed relief to dry areas but also raise the flood risk in low‑lying places. Stay tuned for local weather updates and keep safe if you live in the high‑risk zones.
