Chennai, 6 Oct – The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Chennai says heavy rain will hit Tiruvannamalai, Villupuram, Cuddalore and Kallakurichi on Monday. A low‑pressure system over the southern peninsula is expected to bring strong showers with thunder and lightning.
The RMC warns that the unstable weather could last for three days, sending moderate rain and thunderstorms to large parts of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal until 9 Oct. In the first 24 hours of Monday morning, Egumalai in Madurai logged the state’s highest rainfall at 13 cm. Other heavy‑rain sites included Krishnagiri (12 cm), Namakkal (11 cm), Edappadi in Salem (10 cm), Sankari Durg (7 cm) and Karuppanadhi Dam in Tenkasi (6 cm).
The weekend’s showers brought much‑needed relief in some areas but also caused water‑logging and traffic jams in low‑lying districts. Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Salem and Tirupattur are also slated for heavy rain on Tuesday.
Cities around Chennai can expect partly cloudy skies today, with light to moderate showers and occasional thunderstorms in some neighbourhoods. Temperatures across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal will stay about 3 °C warmer than normal through 9 Oct.
Residents are urged to stay alert for sudden downpours, especially in flood‑prone urban pockets. People in forecasted heavy‑rain zones should avoid unnecessary travel, track weather updates, and be careful of water‑logged roads and open drains. Farmers and fishermen should keep a close eye on advisories, while local authorities are preparing for potential water stagnation.
The RMC will keep monitoring the system and release updates as the northeast monsoon approaches.
