Heavy rain triggers red alert in Mumbai, traffic hit due to waterlogging

Heavy Rain Hits Mumbai: Red Alert Issued Amid Waterlogging and Traffic Chaos

Mumbai woke up to another rainy morning on September 15, with heavy downpours causing widespread waterlogging across the city. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) quickly issued a red alert for Mumbai, warning of intense rainfall that could lead to more disruptions.

IMD officials predict very heavy rain spells, complete with thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds gusting up to 30-40 kmph. This weather alert covers not just Mumbai but also nearby areas in Thane and Raigad districts. "Expect intense showers to continue," the IMD said, urging residents to stay indoors if possible.

The overnight rains turned several roads into virtual rivers, badly affecting traffic in key spots. Early Monday, Mumbai Traffic Police shut down the Andheri Subway in Andheri West after water levels rose to one to one-and-a-half feet. They shared an update on X (formerly Twitter): "Traffic closed at Andheri Subway due to waterlogging. Vehicles diverted via Gokhale Bridge. Drive safe!"

Pune didn’t escape the rains either, with heavy showers soaking the city on Monday morning. Looking ahead, IMD’s forecast points to light to moderate rain with isolated heavy falls in Konkan & Goa, Madhya Maharashtra, and Marathwada on September 16. Even heavier rains hit these regions on September 14 and 15, so locals should keep an eye on Mumbai rain updates and Maharashtra weather alerts.

Authorities are asking everyone to stay cautious—avoid flooded areas and follow traffic diversions to prevent accidents during this Mumbai monsoon season.

Adding to the woes, Mumbai’s monorail service hit a snag in the Wadala area due to a technical glitch early Monday. No one got hurt, and all passengers stayed safe. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) confirmed that 17 passengers on the affected train were quickly moved to another one heading from Chembur and reached the next station by 7:40 AM.

Ward Councillor Rajesh Bhojane, from Ward 175 and a member of the Republican Party of India (Athawale), spoke to about the repeated issues. "The train to Wadala suddenly stopped. We shifted passengers to the Chembur train, and the fire brigade arrived to help. Monorail officials blame a supply problem. I urge the Maharashtra government to fix this recurring monorail breakdown once and for all."

Maha Mumbai Metro Operation Corporation Ltd added that they followed all safety steps. The faulty train got towed away, and services from Sant Gadge Maharaj Chowk to Wadala are running on a single line with some delays. The stretch from Wadala to Chembur is back to normal, and full operations should resume soon. "Passenger safety is our top priority," they assured.

This isn’t the first time—back on August 19, a monorail near Mysore Colony station broke down from a power failure. Teams from Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), fire department, and police jumped in for a quick rescue.

As Mumbai battles these rains, stay tuned for the latest IMD updates to navigate the wet weather safely.
