Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu and Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami both wished people a joyous Karva Chauth in posts on their social‑media pages.
Sukhu shared his greetings on Facebook, saying the festival “symbolises eternal good fortune” and hoping it brings happiness and prosperity to all mothers and sisters. He added a personal wish that the celebration brings joy to married life.
Dhami, on X (formerly Twitter), called Karva Chauth “a profound celebration of love, dedication, and trust” that is deeply rooted in Indian culture. He noted that many women in Uttarakhand observe a water‑free fast for the long life and well‑being of their husbands. In his post he thanked his own wife for her sacrifice and devotion.
Karva Chauth falls on the 10th of October this year, the fourth day of the waning moon in the month of Kartik. Hindu women across India fast from dawn to moonrise, eating a small meal from their argi (a tiny bowl) before sunset. When the moon appears, they break their fast by gazing at it through a sieve, offering a brief prayer, and then share the first bite of food and a sip of water with their husbands.
The festival’s rituals include items such as water, milk, honey, sugar, curd, cumin, incense sticks, camphor, karwa (a barley cake), kalawa (a tiny gold ornament), maththi (a small spoon), roli (a pinch of rice), and an oil lamp. Choosing these items symbolises love and devotion, while the fast itself is a gesture of respect and faith in a marital bond.
Karva Chauth remains one of the most significant festivals for married Hindu women, celebrating marriage and the hope for a long, healthy life together. The holiday’s widespread observance across states like Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand underscores its enduring cultural importance in India.
