Tragic House Collapse in Mandi Claims Three Lives Amid Heavy Rains
In a heartbreaking incident in Himachal Pradesh’s Mandi district, three people lost their lives when a cliff collapsed, sending debris crashing onto a house in the Nihri area. The house gave way completely, trapping those inside. Two others managed to escape and got rescued by quick-acting teams. This disaster struck late on September 16, fueled by relentless heavy rainfall that’s been battering the region.
Superintendent of Police Sakshi Verma shared that rescue operations kicked off immediately, and teams are still working hard at the site. "We rushed to the spot as soon as we got the call, and we’re not stopping until everything’s under control," she said.
Heavy Rains Wreak Havoc in Dharampur Town
The downpours didn’t stop there. Overnight heavy rains lashed Mandi district, turning Dharampur town into a nightmare. Since Monday night, continuous rain has flooded the local bus stand, with water surging in and sweeping away buses and vehicles. Police reports say many state-run buses got submerged, while dozens of private cars, bikes, and scooters floated off in the strong currents.
Dharampur bore the brunt of it all, thanks to the Son Khad river swelling up dramatically around midnight. Floodwaters roared into the bus stand, causing widespread chaos. Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) for Dharampur Mandi confirmed no deaths from this flooding yet, but one person remains missing. Authorities are double-checking reports and searching actively.
Homes and shops near the riverbank flooded fast, pushing residents to climb onto rooftops for safety. Debris piled into several buildings, and vehicle damage looks severe. A nearby hostel with about 150 students also got waterlogged, but everyone safely moved to upper floors. DSP Sanjeev Sood led police and rescue teams through the night, pulling people to safety.
Good news: The Son Khad river’s water levels are dropping now. Police and local administration stay on the ground, assessing damage and helping those affected.
Himachal Pradesh Monsoon Toll Hits 404 Lives
This latest tragedy adds to the mounting monsoon devastation in Himachal Pradesh. Since June 20, heavy rains and related disasters have claimed 404 lives, according to the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA). Their latest report breaks it down: 229 deaths from rain-induced events like landslides, flash floods, drowning, electrocution, lightning, and house collapses. Another 175 people died in road accidents linked to the weather.
Mandi tops the list of worst-hit districts with 37 rain-related fatalities, followed closely by Kangra (34), Kullu (31), Chamba (28), and Shimla (23). The SDMA’s cumulative loss report highlights how these relentless rains have turned the monsoon season into a crisis across the state.
As recovery efforts continue in Mandi and beyond, residents hope for a break in the weather to rebuild and heal from the Himachal Pradesh floods and landslides. Stay tuned for updates on this ongoing situation.
