Heavy Rains Wreak Havoc in Himachal Pradesh’s Kangra District

Heavy rainfall has battered Kangra district in Himachal Pradesh, causing massive destruction and heartbreak. From June 20 to September 15, 2025, the relentless downpours led to over Rs. 603 crore in damages and claimed 55 precious lives, Deputy Commissioner Hemraj Bairwa shared on Tuesday.

DC Bairwa revealed that the total losses hit Rs. 60,310.225 lakh, or Rs. 603 crore. The tragedy didn’t stop at human loss—215 livestock also perished. Homes took a huge hit too: 180 mud houses collapsed completely, and 27 concrete ones were destroyed. Meanwhile, 1,076 mud houses and 126 concrete houses suffered partial damage.

The floods spared no one, ripping through infrastructure like 1,388 cowsheds, 74 labour sheds, kitchens, bathrooms, and 33 shops. This has severely disrupted daily lives and livelihoods in the region.

Breaking down the department-wise damages, the Public Works Department (PWD) bore the brunt with Rs. 29,808 lakh in losses. The Irrigation and Drinking Water Department lost Rs. 26,315 lakh, while the Himachal Pradesh State Electricity Board faced Rs. 627 lakh in damages. Other sectors like Rural Development (Rs. 1,126 lakh), Health (Rs. 280 lakh), Agriculture (Rs. 188.83 lakh), and Horticulture (Rs. 2.91 lakh) also reported significant hits. Even Dharamshala Municipal Corporation clocked over Rs. 620 lakh in destruction.

Relief efforts are in full swing across Kangra. Teams are airlifting essential supplies to hard-to-reach spots like Bara Bhangal. Around the Pong Dam area, officials work non-stop to rehabilitate families and restore normalcy.

DC Bairwa promised full support for every affected family, including financial aid as per government rules. He directed all departments to submit detailed damage reports quickly for fast-track reconstruction.

As the monsoon season continues in Himachal Pradesh, the DC urged residents to stay alert and report emergencies right away. The District Disaster Control Room runs 24/7—dial the toll-free helpline 1077 for help anytime.

This Himachal Pradesh rainfall disaster highlights the urgent need for better preparedness against extreme weather. Stay safe, Kangra!
