In Bilaspur, Himachal Pradesh, a private bus was crushed by a landslide on Tuesday evening, leaving 15 people dead and several injured. The tragedy struck in the Balughat area of the Jhandutta assembly segment as heavy rains had churned the hillside for two days.
The bus, carrying an estimated 25‑30 passengers, was hit by falling debris. Nine men and four women were recovered from the wreckage. Two children were rescued and brought to AIIMS Bilaspur, where they received emergency treatment. Police still search for an eight‑year‑old boy who is missing.
Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri said rescue teams from the police, Home Guard and fire department rushed to the site, aided by local residents. He pledged to visit the scene and oversee relief efforts. State Disaster Response Force and National Disaster Response Force teams, using sniffer dogs, are still combing the rubble.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep sorrow over the loss. He announced that each family of a deceased will receive an ex‑gratia payment of ₹2 lakh, and injured victims will receive ₹50 000 from the Prime Minister National Relief Fund. Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu also offered condolences, ordered the district administration to expedite medical care for the wounded, and asked for regular updates on the rescue effort.
Heavy machinery is being deployed to clear debris, but difficult terrain and intermittent showers complicate the work. The government guarantees it will support the families affected by this devastating accident.
