Hindi not a rival, but a friend to Indian languages: HM Amit Shah (Ld)

Union Home Minister Amit Shah kicked off Hindi Diwas 2025 and the fifth All India Rajbhasha Conference at Mahatma Mandir in Gandhinagar on Sunday. He made a strong point: Hindi isn’t a rival to other Indian languages—it’s their friend and partner.

In his keynote speech, Shah highlighted how moving the conference outside Delhi to different states over the last five years has boosted ties between Hindi and regional languages like Gujarati. “This approach strengthens communication and brings languages closer,” he said.

Shah traced Hindi’s deep roots in Gujarat, crediting legends like Dayanand Saraswati, Mahatma Gandhi, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Kanhaiyalal Munshi, and Umashankar Joshi for embracing and promoting it. “Thanks to the harmony between Gujarati and Hindi, our kids get a bigger national platform,” he added. Holding the Rajbhasha Conference away from Delhi for the fifth time, he noted, sparks fresh ideas and energy for language enthusiasts.

Pushing for Hindi’s growth, Shah urged expanding its role beyond chats and official work. “Hindi must shine in science, technology, and justice too,” he declared. To make this happen, he launched ‘Saarthi’, a handy translation tool. It lets officials in any state convert government letters to Hindi or back to local languages, speeding up replies.

Shah also celebrated the upgraded Digital Hindi Shabd Sindhu dictionary. “It now boasts around seven lakh words, and by 2029, it’ll be the world’s biggest dictionary across all languages,” he shared.

In a heartfelt move, the minister handed out AI-powered smart glasses to visually impaired people. “These glasses let you read in your mother tongue, spot faces, check currency, and use voice assistants—like a personal buddy,” he explained.

Turning to parents, Shah had a simple appeal: “Talk to your children in their mother tongue. Studies show it boosts their thinking, reading, and decision-making skills by up to 30%.”

Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel joined in, greeting everyone on Hindi Diwas and praising Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s efforts to unite India through languages and culture. Shah echoed this, saying Sardar Patel built a united Akhand Bharat post-Independence, while Modi is forging a ‘Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat’ with cultural bridges. “Language and culture go hand in hand. In Gujarat, diverse tongues and traditions blend beautifully. Honoring Hindi means celebrating all Indian languages,” he added.

Patel encouraged everyone to weave Hindi and regional languages into daily life, spotlighting projects like the Digital Hindi Shabd Sindhu. Wrapping up, Shah called for a pledge: “On Hindi Diwas, let’s use the power of all languages—including Hindi—to create a self-reliant, developed, and culturally rich India.”

The event buzzed with energy, featuring new publications on Hindi and Indian languages, awards for over a dozen institutions and writers promoting Rajbhasha, and more than 6,000 officials and delegates joining in.
