India has just taken a big leap in telecom self-reliance with the launch of its fully homegrown 4G technology. Prime Minister Narendra Modi kicked off the indigenous 4G stack and around one lakh BSNL 4G towers from Jharsuguda in Odisha, marking a proud moment for the country.
Union Minister for Communications Jyotiraditya Scindia couldn’t hold back his excitement while chatting with reporters. “This is a historic day not just for BSNL, but for the entire nation,” he said. Under PM Modi’s leadership, India has pulled off what seemed impossible—building its own 4G stack from scratch.
Scindia pointed out that India now joins an elite club as the fifth country to develop complete indigenous 4G technology. Before this, only four nations dominated the field. He called it a massive Rs. 50,000 crore push that PM Modi dedicated to the people today.
The rollout means big wins for everyday users. About 2.5 crore people can now tap into better connectivity, especially in remote spots for things like long-distance calls and data. Scindia highlighted how BSNL’s Swadeshi 4G Network will reach the first villages in states like Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Uttarakhand, and Himachal Pradesh. Even far-flung areas such as Lakshadweep and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands will get this homegrown service.
Looking ahead, Scindia shared India’s bold plans. “We lagged behind in the 4G race, but we’re keeping pace with 5G,” he noted. “India will lead the world in 6G.” He added that the country aims to contribute at least 10 patents soon and help set global 6G standards.
PM Modi echoed the pride during the launch. He recalled how India always played catch-up with 2G, 3G, and 4G, relying on foreign tech. “That dependency wasn’t right for us,” Modi said. Now, with BSNL’s hard work and local expertise, India has flipped the script. Indian firms have put the nation among the top five worldwide for indigenous 4G launches.
The timing adds extra sparkle—it’s BSNL’s 25th anniversary. Modi praised the team’s dedication and said this move positions India as a rising global telecom manufacturing hub. Odisha gets a special shoutout too, as the launch happens right there in Jharsuguda with those 1 lakh towers.
The real impact? Over 2 crore Indians will benefit directly from expanded 4G access. Plus, around 30,000 villages that once had no high-speed internet will finally connect, boosting everything from education to business in rural areas.
