Germany’s ambassador to India, Philipp Ackermann, said on Friday that he hopes a new meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin will be more productive than the one in Alaska. He spoke at the NDTV World Summit in New Delhi, urging stronger moves to end the Ukraine war.
Ackermann warned that Europe feels a fresh sense of danger after recent Russian military flights and drone sightings. “A few weeks ago, Russian jets briefly entered NATO airspace, and drones were spotted over Scandinavian airports,” he said. “We are no longer exhausted – we want this war to end.”
He added that the U.S. has signaled a willingness to talk with Ukraine, a sign of resolve that puts pressure on Russia. “We need a mix of strength, clarity, and a willingness to negotiate,” he said. “In the Middle East we see cease‑fires; here we still need a real peace process.”
The ambassador praised Ukraine’s support in counter‑drone operations. “Ukrainian teams are experts at fighting drones. Their technology is advanced, and we are learning from them,” Ackermann said. “We must be ready to defend NATO territory and increase defense spending to deter further aggression.”
In short, Germany remains deeply concerned about the Ukraine conflict and calls for decisive action that balances firm deterrence with open channels for dialogue.
