In Hyderabad on Saturday afternoon, a routine patrol turned tense when a deputy police officer fired his gun, injuring a man who was trying to flee after stealing a mobile phone.
The clash happened around 5 p.m. in Chaderghat, near Victory Playground by the Musi River. Deputy Commissioner of Police (South East), Sai Chaitanya, was on his way back to court after a meeting when he spotted a hand‑salting, knife‑armed thief. The officer and a constable moved in to stop the theft.
The suspect—identified as Omer Ansari of Kalapatthar Police Station—shoved a knife at the constable. When the officer tried to get him to a safer spot, Ansari lunged and hit the constable. Witnesses say the DCP reacted quickly, discharging two rounds that struck the thief in the hand and stomach. Ansari was taken to a private hospital with his injuries; the police officer and the constable also received medical care for minor wounds.
Police investigations followed immediately. The DCP’s action was defended by Police Commissioner C. V. Sajjanar, who said the constable was under imminent threat. An additional case was filed by Sultan Bazar Police, and other senior officials—including DCP K. Shipavalli and DCP Sneha Mehra—checked on the scene.
The incident sparked concern among local residents, many of whom witnessed police and the thief converging in the playground. Authorities remain on the lookout for the second suspect who escaped.
This event underscores ongoing challenges in Hyderabad’s police response to theft and assault incidents, highlighting the need for swift but safe action in crowded areas.
