Heavy rain has hammered Hyderabad, Telangana, turning streets into rivers and sparking a flurry of emergency actions. Last night, officials opened the gates of the Himayat Sagar reservoir after nonstop downpours, causing the Musi River to swell and overflow near the Chaderghat bridge.
To keep people safe, police shut down the road by the bridge, which quickly led to massive traffic jams in the bustling area. Nearby homes along the Musi River in Chaderghat faced flooding too, with water seeping into low-lying spots and turning neighborhoods into soggy messes.
The chaos didn’t stop there. On Friday, intense rainfall brought severe waterlogging to Mithila Nagar Colony in the Meerpet Municipal Corporation, Rangareddy District. Residents in these flood-prone areas dealt with knee-deep water, highlighting the growing risks from Hyderabad’s heavy rain season.
Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy saw this coming. On Thursday, with forecasts predicting more rain over the next two days, he put the entire state administration on high alert. From his office, Reddy ordered officials across departments to watch flood-prone spots closely and jump into action for public safety.
District collectors got clear instructions: Check regular flood zones, move folks from vulnerable lowlands to relief camps, and stay proactive. Authorities must also stop traffic on soaked roads and watch over causeways to prevent accidents.
The Electricity Department stepped up too, promising steady power while tackling dangers like dangling wires in the storm. As Dussehra holidays approach, schools and colleges in Hyderabad got a heads-up to stay ready, and everyone’s urged to hunker down indoors during the downpours.
In Hyderabad, rescue teams from the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), HYDRAA, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) stand ready for any crisis. With more rain on the horizon, Telangana braces for whatever comes next in this wet spell.
