Hyderabad – The historic Chowmahalla Palace, once the royal home of the Asaf Jahi Nawabs, welcomed visitors with a fresh photo gallery celebrating Mukarram Jah Bahadur, the eighth Nizam of Hyderabad.
The exhibit opened on Monday to mark the Nizam’s birth anniversary. His son, Azmet Jah – the current titular Nizam – cut the ribbon, joined by Mukarram Jah’s wife, Princess Esra; his sister Shehkar; and other family members.
Over 250 images, many of them never before shown, map out the life of the former Nizam. They include childhood photos, the moment he took his oath in 1967, pictures of his two marriages, and rare documents that reveal his ties to India’s first Prime Minister, Pandit Jinnah. One letter, written in 1962, shows Mukarram Jah asking Nehru to let him serve at the border. He later earned the honorary rank of lieutenant and then colonel from the President.
Beyond the pictures, the gallery displays priceless artifacts: a gold dastar he wore as a boy, a Mughal sword from the Asaf Jahi line, and a 28‑foot family tree chart linking the Asaf Jahi and Ottoman families. Copies of letters to Jawaharlal Nehru, as well as papers from the Chowmahalla Palace Archives, also hang on the walls.
In his lifetime, Mukarram Jah served as pro‑chancellor of Osmania University and founded charitable trusts such as the Mukarram Jah Trust for Education and Learning. He died in Turkey on January 14, 2023, at the age of 89, and was buried at the Mecca Masjid in Hyderabad, honoring his ancestors’ resting place.
The exhibition, designed by Anuradha Naik Associates, invites tourists and locals alike to explore a forgotten chapter of Hyderabad’s royal heritage and to see how the Nizam’s legacy extends into today’s India.
