In Bengaluru on Tuesday, Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister and Congress President D.K. Shivakumar fired back at sharp criticisms from Union Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy. Shivakumar challenged Kumaraswamy to an open debate, saying he’s tired of the minister’s “hit-and-run politics.”
Kumaraswamy, who handles heavy industries and steel, recently claimed Shivakumar faces jail time soon over alleged land deal wrongdoings. Responding to reporters in Bengaluru, Shivakumar dismissed the attacks. “Kumaraswamy has been plotting against me from the start, and now he’s openly predicting my jail day is near,” Shivakumar said. “After Navratri, I’ll give him a strong reply. Let any major media outlet set up a platform for us to debate—just like that T-20 match in Satanur.”
Shivakumar pointed out past family conspiracies and urged an end to them. He noted he’d already invited Kumaraswamy to debate in the state assembly, but the minister dodged it by heading to Parliament. “No one in his party matches me, so let’s face off directly,” Shivakumar added. “I’ll share my records on his family, and he can bring his so-called evidence on me. The public deserves to see it all.”
He stressed that only judges decide jail terms, not politicians. “Kumaraswamy talks like he’s the judge, even while rushing to court himself,” Shivakumar remarked.
On building better ties between Karnataka and the central government for more aid—like flood relief—Shivakumar said the state is open to it. “As a Union Minister, Kumaraswamy can lead our delegation to meet the Prime Minister. We’re ready.”
Shivakumar also pledged full support for Kumaraswamy’s plans to boost industries in areas like Mandya and Ramanagara, creating jobs. “Even if they use their own land, as his son mentioned, we’ll approve it quickly.”
Defending the Bidadi township project against claims it’s just a real estate grab, Shivakumar shot back: “I don’t need lessons on real estate from him. I’m a Bengaluru native with property right here—I didn’t buy my way in from outside.”
Kumaraswamy’s accusation of looting Brahmin lands drew a firm denial. “He should file an official complaint now and let investigators handle it. I haven’t sunk that low.”
Regarding Karnataka’s flood response, Shivakumar highlighted swift action. “Key ministers visited the affected spots, and Chief Minister Siddaramaiah inspected them personally.”
Rumors of congestion fees in Bengaluru? Shivakumar called them baseless. “No such proposal has come from the BJP-led central government. Some industrialists suggested ideas to help residents, and we’re reviewing them.”
He brushed off complaints about shoddy road repairs near his official home. “Poor quality work happens in all BJP MLAs’ areas,” he quipped.
Shifting to brighter notes, Shivakumar extended Dussehra greetings to Karnataka residents. “Good rains have boosted crops, and we’re celebrating the festival for 11 days this year. We kicked it off with prayers to Goddess Chamundeshwari. Ayudha Puja happened at our party office and Vidhana Soudha today. Goddess Durga wipes away troubles—may she do so for everyone.”
He also mourned the sudden death of Assamese artist Zubeen Garg, known for composing music, singing in 40 languages, and playing 12 instruments. “A young talent gone too soon. On behalf of the party, I’ll attend his condolence meeting Wednesday and pay respects.”
