A survivor of the devastating stampede at a political rally in Karur, Tamil Nadu, opened up about his family’s nightmare, highlighting the deep pain rippling through communities after the incident claimed 38 lives.

Speaking to reporters in Chennai, the man shared his raw grief. “My brother has two sons. His elder son died. We don’t know where his younger son is. My brother’s wife is in the ICU right now. I don’t know what to do. My son’s eye is injured,” he said, his words capturing the chaos and loss from the crowd crush during Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief and actor Vijay’s event on Saturday.

Vijay, heartbroken by the Tamil Nadu stampede tragedy, posted on X to express his sorrow. “My heart is shattered; I am writhing in unbearable, indescribable pain and sorrow that words cannot express. I extend my deepest condolences and sympathies to the families of my dear brothers and sisters who lost their lives in Karur. I pray for the swift recovery of those receiving treatment in the hospital,” he wrote.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin responded quickly to the Karur rally stampede, announcing Rs 10 lakh in compensation for each family of the victims. He also pledged Rs 1 lakh to those injured and receiving hospital care. To get to the bottom of what happened, Stalin set up a one-member Commission of Inquiry led by retired High Court Judge Justice Aruna Jagadeesan. The panel will investigate the incident thoroughly and report back to the government.

In his statement, Stalin called the loss “irreparable” and shared his shock over the deaths of 36 people, including eight children and 16 women. “These priceless lives lost have shaken all our hearts. I extend my deepest condolences and sympathies to the families who have suffered this irreparable loss. I have directed that all those admitted to hospitals for treatment must receive the best possible medical care,” he said, stressing the government’s full support for victims and families.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also weighed in on X, offering condolences for the Karur political rally tragedy. “The unfortunate incident during a political rally in Karur, Tamil Nadu, is deeply saddening. My thoughts are with the families who have lost their loved ones. Wishing strength to them in this difficult time. Praying for a swift recovery to all those injured,” his post read.

The stampede at the TVK rally has left Tamil Nadu reeling, with ongoing investigations aiming to prevent future crowd crushes at large events.
