The India Meteorological Department (IMD) launched a Red alert for eight Tamil Nadu districts and an Orange alert for ten districts – including Chennai – after a deep‑depression storm over the Bay of Bengal pushed into the region on Tuesday.
The storm first appeared over the southwest Bay of Bengal at about 5:30 a.m. and has since tightened into a deep depression. Meteorologists say it will grow stronger over the next 24 hours and head west‑northwest toward northern Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and southern Andhra Pradesh. By Wednesday afternoon, the system could become a low‑pressure zone over the southwest Bay, moving toward the coastlines of Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh.
Coastal areas should brace for heavy rainfall, strong winds, and rough seas in the coming days. The IMD’s Red‑alert zones – villages in Villupuram, Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Thiruvarur, Thanjavur, Pudukottai, Ramanathapuram, and Karaikal (Puducherry) – face very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall. The Orange‑alert zones, which include Chennai, Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur, Chengalpattu, Kallakurichi, Perambalur, Ariyalur, Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli, and Kanniyakumari, will see heavy to very heavy rain.
Fishermen in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry are warned against heading out to sea. Winds could reach 45–55 km/h, with gusts up to 65 km/h, creating dangerous conditions on the coast.
Local authorities are on high alert. Relief camps are ready, and disaster‑management teams have moved into coastal districts. The Tamil Nadu State Disaster Management Authority (TNSDMA) has ramped up preparations to keep flooding, power cuts, and other hazards under control.
Residents in low‑lying and seaside areas are advised to stay indoors, avoid non‑essential travel, and keep track of weather updates. The IMD will continue monitoring the storm as it intensifies.
