India has scored a big win at the global postal stage! The country got re-elected to the Council of Administration and the Postal Operations Council of the Universal Postal Union (UPU) during the 28th UPU Congress in Dubai. The Ministry of Communications shared this exciting news on Friday.

For those new to it, the UPU is a key United Nations agency that brings together postal experts from around the world to boost cooperation in the postal sector. The Council of Administration handles big-picture stuff like policies, rules, and governance. Meanwhile, the Postal Operations Council focuses on the nuts and bolts—think technical upgrades and modernizing postal services everywhere.

This re-election shows how much trust the world has in India Post’s strong leadership, smart reforms, and cool digital projects. India joined the UPU way back in 1876 and has always stepped up to build a stronger global postal network.

In the last few years, India led the charge on digital changes like DigiPIN for easy digital addressing, UPI-linked cross-border money transfers, and e-commerce help through Dak Ghar Niryat Kendras. The country also supported training programs under the Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation (ITEC) initiative, sharing expertise with postal workers from Asia, Africa, and beyond. Plus, India chipped in with membership fees and extra funds to keep the UPU financially solid.

Looking ahead, India plans to ramp up these efforts in the new Dubai cycle, pushing for more innovation, inclusivity, and teamwork worldwide. With this win, India stays front and center in shaping the future of global postal services, focusing on growth and development. The country even aims to lead the Council of Administration in the coming years.

Communications Minister Jyotiraditya M. Scindia celebrated the news, saying, “I’m thrilled to announce that India has been elected to both the Postal Operations Council and the Council of Administration at the 28th Universal Postal Congress in Dubai. This is a proud moment that highlights India’s rising global role under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision.”

He gave a shoutout to External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, adding, “His dedicated work and sharp insights played a huge part in this success. Together, we’re pushing innovation, financial inclusion, and sustainability in the postal world.”

Scindia wrapped up by noting India’s massive postal network—the world’s largest, serving 1.45 billion people. “This puts us in a prime spot to help build a modern, inclusive, and tough global postal system. A big thanks to all member countries for their confidence in us.”
