Hope for India-US Trade Thaw Amid Tariff Tensions
In a positive note on India-US relations, Mahinder Singh Gilzian, President of the Indian Overseas Congress USA, shared his optimism that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump will team up to resolve the ongoing tariff issues. Speaking from Bhadradri Kothagudem in Telangana on Friday, Gilzian highlighted the need for a strong, long-term partnership between the two nations.
"There’s a tariff war brewing between India and America right now," Gilzian told . "I hope both countries approach this friendly and sort it out. As the world’s top democracies, India and the US need each other and should find democratic ways to collaborate."
He added, "I believe PM Modi and President Trump will soon strike a deal that’s great for both sides—not just India, but the US too. We’re aiming for a lasting relationship, not something short-term. Both nations depend on each other, and that’s our goal. We live in the US, but India is our karmabhoomi."
Gilzian’s comments come as the US has slapped 25% tariffs on Indian goods, later hiking them to 50% over India’s purchase of Russian oil. This has sparked concerns about the India-US trade war, but signs of improvement are emerging.
During his India visit, Gilzian traveled to Palwancha in Telangana to meet Nalla Suresh Reddy, chairman of the Shyamala Gopalan Educational Foundation. Reddy recently held a 41-day homam ritual to support former US Vice President Kamala Harris’s presidential bid.
Explaining his trip, Gilzian said, "I flew from New York to Delhi, then landed in Bangalore yesterday morning. One of our senior leaders, Arti Krishna, got promoted from secretary of the Indian Overseas Congress to MLC in Karnataka, so I attended her oath ceremony. My friend Suresh Reddy invited me to Palwancha, and I also wanted to connect with Congress leaders in the district and across Telangana."
Echoing this hope, former Indian Ambassador to the US, Arun Singh, pointed to recent positive signals in India-US trade relations. He referenced PM Modi’s view of the US as India’s "natural partner" and Trump’s description of their ties as a "special relationship."
Singh told , "On Friday, Trump posted on social media that the US-India bond is special and things will work out. PM Modi responded warmly. This morning, Trump announced that trade negotiations have restarted, and he’s confident about quick results. Modi replied positively too. Both sides recognize how vital this relationship is, and they’re now pushing to stabilize it."
These developments suggest a brighter path ahead for India-US trade talks, easing worries over tariffs and strengthening bilateral ties.
