India’s first urban public transport ropeway trial begins in Varanasi

Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, India – India’s first urban public transport ropeway kicked off its trial run today in the holy city of Varanasi. This exciting new project promises to ease traffic woes and offer a fresh way to get around.

Pulkit Garg, Vice President of the Varanasi Development Authority, shared the buzz around the launch. “Everyone here is very excited about this,” he said. The 3.8-kilometer ropeway corridor connects five stations, each packed with comfy waiting areas and passenger-friendly perks like restrooms and seating. It’s all built as eco-friendly infrastructure to keep the environment in mind – think zero emissions and a greener Varanasi.

The whole setup, from construction to 15 years of operation and maintenance, comes in at Rs 815 crore. Riders can look forward to 148 gondolas gliding along the line, handling up to nearly 1 lakh passengers every day. Safety first: the system boasts three levels of rescue features for peace of mind.

NHLML, a sister outfit of the National Highways Authority of India under the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, handled the build. Garg called it “a very visionary project for Varanasi” and urged folks to use it responsibly once it’s fully up and running.

This ropeway ties into bigger plans in Uttar Pradesh. The state’s 2023-24 budget spotlighted better rail and ropeway links, with special focus on Varanasi’s pioneering public transport ropeway. Lawmakers set aside Rs 150 crore to roll out similar services in Varanasi and other cities like Lucknow, boosting urban infrastructure across the board.

As Varanasi blends ancient vibes with modern upgrades, this eco-friendly ropeway could transform daily commutes and draw more visitors to explore the city’s temples and ghats from above.
