In West Bengal’s Jalpaiguri district, a violent attack on two top BJP officials last Monday has sparked anger across the political spectrum.
Former Congress MP Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury slammed the assault and called the police “silent” after the mob beat the men while they were traveling to deliver relief to landslide victims in North Bengal.
The violence unfolded as BJP Member of Parliament Khagen Murmu and Member of Legislative Assembly Shankar Ghosh were on their way to meet residents who had been displaced by recent landslides. Ghosh was left with minor bruises, but Murmu suffered serious injuries to his face and head. Local police did not intervene, and the attackers were never identified.
Chowdhury said the incident “is an injustice.” He added that anyone from any party—whether BJP, Congress, Trinamool, the Left or Muslim League—can walk into these areas to help flood‑affected people. “When you leave your party and the police stay quiet while you’re attacked, that is very wrong,” he told .
The congress leader was quick to criticize the ruling Trinamool Congress government for its role, saying the police often ignore attacks on their own party’s workers. “If something happens to somebody linked to the ruling party, the police keep quiet and the opposition’s politicians start slipping with their accusations,” Chowdhury said. “This is a pattern in Bengal.”
Chowdhury also used the moment to highlight his party’s growing momentum for the upcoming Bihar Assembly elections. He described the opposition alliance, known as the Mahagathbandhan, as a “force for change” that is gaining support from ordinary voters. “The efforts of Rahul Gandhi, Tejashwi Yadav and other leaders to bring change to Bihar are being backed by people,” he said. “Even before the polls, there has been coordination and understanding among the constituent parties, so we expect a different result this time.”
The attack on BJP leaders occurred at a time of heightened political tension. West Bengal’s chief minister has been accused of pressuring the police to suppress opposition figures while Prime Minister Narendra Modi has publicly criticized the state government. The tensions are expected to intensify as the next Bihar Legislative Assembly elections approach.
Key points for voters and observers:
* Two BJP leaders were violently attacked in Jalpaiguri while helping landslide victims.
* The police did not act and were criticized by Congress for their silence.
* Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury called the assault an “injustice” and condemned the ruling party’s stance.
* Chowdhury’s message also touches on the Mahagathbandhan’s strategy for the Bihar elections, where opposition parties aim to bring “change.”
As the elections loom, political leaders in both West Bengal and Bihar are expected to intensify their campaigns, with attention on how frontline workers are treated and how quickly law‑enforcement responds to violence. The incident may become a focal point in discussions about police accountability and political violence in the state.
