Police in Chandigarh have asked the family of former IPS officer Y Puran Kumar to arrange a post‑mortem at his home as soon as possible. The officer, who was found dead on October 7, is suspected of having died by suicide, and authorities say a full investigation is underway.
Chandigarh’s Director General of Police, Sagar Preet Hooda, told reporters that the family has voiced complaints and that the police are working to address them. “We met with the family and asked them to get the post‑mortem done immediately,” Hooda said. “They have some grievances, and we’re handling them while the investigation moves forward.”
A Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been formed to probe the death. The team, led by Inspector General Pushpendra Kumar of the Chandigarh police, will investigate the case registered under Sections 108 and 3(5) of the Indian Penal Code and Section 3(1)(r) of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
The SIT includes senior officers such as SSP Kanwardeep Kaur, SPICity KM Priyanka, DSP Traffic Charanyit Singh Vik, SOPO South Queller Kaur, and SHO Jarveer Singh Rana. They may bring in additional experts to gather evidence, interview witnesses, and produce a final report.
Earlier today, a Congress delegation – including MP Deepender Singh Hooda and party leader Randeep Singh Surjewala – visited the officer’s residence to show solidarity.
The Haryana IAS Officers Association also expressed deep sorrow over Y Puran Kumar’s sudden death, praising his integrity and service to the public. The investigation continues as authorities seek to understand the circumstances surrounding the tragic end of the senior IPS officer in Chandigarh.
