In the remote blocks of Doongi and Kalakote in Jammu and Kashmir’s Rajouri district, local communities wrapped up key rural development planning this week. On Thursday, Gram Sabha meetings successfully finalized exercises under the Adi Karmayogi Abhiyan and the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA). These locally approved plans now head to the district level for the final go-ahead, aiming to boost jobs and growth in these hard-to-reach areas.
Kalakote Block Development Officer Kuldeep Raj highlighted the progress, noting that teams rolled out two major plans on October 2—one focused on MGNREGA work shelves and the other on the Adi Karmayogi Vision Action Plan. “We spotted all the gaps ahead of time by talking to local representatives and residents who shared their needs,” Raj told . “This spot is pretty isolated, so I’m thrilled with how the community stepped up to build a strong roadmap for the future.”
Over in Doongi Block, BDO Datta Ram shared similar excitement. The Adi Karmayogi Abhiyan, which kicked off on September 15, wrapped up on October 2—Gandhi Jayanti—with the plan getting a green light from the Gram Sabha. “Folks here raised plenty of concerns, but we listened and tailored the plan to match what they really need,” Ram said.
This comes amid broader efforts in Rajouri to empower rural women. Just a week earlier, on September 27, officials reported more than 7,000 women-led self-help groups (SHGs) thriving under the Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana-National Rural Livelihoods Mission (DAY-NRLM). These groups involve over 50,000 women tackling everything from farming to small businesses, sparking real income opportunities in the region.
