The Indian Army’s Chinar Corps honored two of its own who lost their lives during a counter‑terror operation in the Kishtwar Range near Kokernag, Jammu and Kashmir. Lance Havildar Palash Ghosh and Lance Naik Sujay Ghosh, both from the Chinar Corps, died in a fierce snowstorm that swept through the mountains on the night of October 6.
The corps posted a heartfelt tribute on X, calling the soldiers “bravehearts” and pledging support to their families. “Their courage and dedication will forever inspire us,” the post read. “We stand in solidarity with the bereaved families and are committed to their well‑being.”
The two soldiers went missing during a night operation where the team confronted a severe snowstorm and white‑out conditions. An intense search and rescue effort followed, but harsh weather hampered progress. Rescue teams struggled to navigate the slick, fog‑shrouded terrain that made visibility almost zero.
In the same week, Union Home Minister Amit Shah issued a directive to keep security forces on high alert. He warned that terrorists could exploit winter weather to infiltrate across the Line of Control (LoC) and the international border. The minister met with military and police officials in New Delhi to review the situation. He asked the Army, Border Security Force and Jammu and Kashmir Police to bolster their presence on vulnerable mountain passes and improve intelligence‑sharing.
The Kishtwar Range is already a hotspot for infiltration attempts. Pakistan‑based terrorist groups often use fog, snow, and difficult terrain to push infiltrators into Indian territory. With winter advancing, several passes in north Kashmir and the Pir Panjal range are expected to see heavy snowfall, which will further challenge surveillance and border‑patrol activities.
The incident reminds authorities that the fight against terror in Jammu and Kashmir continues amid harsh winter conditions. The Indian Army remains vigilant, honoring the sacrifice of Ghosh and Sujay while stepping up measures to protect the region’s borders.
