Congress leader Ghulam Ahmad Mir is upbeat about the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections in Jammu and Kashmir. He predicts the ruling coalition will snag three out of four seats, with a potential battle for the fourth.
Mir explained the process follows Election Commission of India guidelines. Officials will issue three notifications starting October 6—one for two seats and another covering the remaining two.
“The coalition has the numbers to secure the first two seats without any hassle,” Mir told reporters. For the next notification involving two seats, he feels confident they can claim one easily. As for the fourth seat, the team will map out a strategy soon.
He added that National Conference leaders Farooq Abdullah and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah will huddle with allies, including Congress, once the notifications drop. Congress plays a key role in the National Conference-led coalition.
The Election Commission announced these biennial Rajya Sabha elections on September 24, covering four seats from Jammu and Kashmir and one from Punjab. Voters will head to the polls on October 24, with results counted the same day.
These Jammu and Kashmir seats have sat empty since February 2021, following the retirement of former members Ghulam Nabi Azad, Mir Mohammad Fayaz, Shamsher Singh, and Nazir Ahmed Laway.
