Srinagar, India — Get ready for some rough weather in Jammu and Kashmir. The Meteorological Department issued a warning Friday, predicting rain across the plains and snow in the higher areas starting Saturday, October 4, through October 7.
A powerful western disturbance is heading toward the region, bringing light to moderate rain in the plains and snow over the mountains. Expect the worst of it from the night of October 5 into the morning of October 7, with heavier snow in spots like Anantnag, Kulgam, Shopian, Zojila Pass, Pir Ki Gali, Razdan Pass, Sinthan Pass, and Kupwara-Sadna Pass. Middle mountain areas could see moderate snow, while Kashmir’s plains face light to heavy rain. In Jammu, isolated spots might get very heavy downpours, plus thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds up to 40-50 km/h, or even 60-70 km/h in stronger bursts.
This Jammu and Kashmir weather forecast could spell trouble for travel. Roads like the Jammu-Srinagar national highway, Srinagar-Leh highway, and other routes in the middle and higher elevations may face disruptions from snow and rain. Watch out for landslides, mudslides, and falling rocks in vulnerable areas. Water levels in rivers, streams, and low-lying spots could rise quickly.
Farmers, hold off on outdoor work from October 5 to 7 to stay safe. The advisory highlights these risks amid the region’s recent history of devastating floods in August and September, which hammered Jammu especially. Those floods wrecked roads, buildings, farms in places like Samba, Jammu, and Kathua, and orchards in Kulgam, Shopian, Pulwama, and Anantnag as land washed away. With snow forecast in Kashmir and rain in Jammu, locals are bracing for more potential impacts on infrastructure and agriculture.
