A huge blast on the Jaipur‑Ajmer Highway on Tuesday night killed at least one person and left the area in chaos. The explosion happened near the Sawarda culvert where a truck full of LPG cylinders had been parked beside a roadside eatery. A speeding chemical tanker crashed onto the truck, igniting the cylinders and causing a chain‑reaction fire that sent flames so bright they were visible up to two kilometres away.
The blast destroyed five vehicles and hurled metal shrapnel as far as 280 metres, shattering the quiet of nearby villages. Local residents fled into the night, while visitors to the dhaba were caught in the sudden fire. Emergency crews—police, firefighters and the Shahid Zainul Beg Rescue Force—arrived quickly and kept six fire engines running until the blaze was under control.
The chemical tanker’s extreme heat made the rescue tough. Thick smoke and toxic fumes forced the teams to cover their faces, and traffic on both sides of the highway came to a standstill. The road stayed closed until the fire was fully extinguished and the area declared safe.
By about 3 a.m., rescue workers recovered charred remains, which were wrapped in a red bundle and taken to the SMS Hospital mortuary in Jaipur. The hospital’s forensic team will analyze the bones and ashes to confirm the identity of the deceased. So far, the driver and a companion of the tanker are missing.
Police are still investigating the cause of the collision and how the tanker could have struck the LPG truck. Updates will arrive once the forensic report is ready. The incident underscores how quickly an LPG disaster can turn deadly, and authorities are urging drivers to exercise caution on the Jaipur‑Ajmer highway.
