Jaipur – After a devastating fire at the Trauma Centre of Sawai Man Singh (SMS) Hospital killed eight patients, senior Congress leader and former Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot has pushed for a judicial inquiry.
Gehlot toured the damaged centre and spoke directly to the families still searching for their loved ones. “We are very saddened that no one is talking about an investigation,” he said. “The families of the deceased say they don’t know where the bodies are. This is a very bad situation. A judicial enquiry is necessary for this tragedy.”
Rajasthan’s Deputy Chief Minister Prem Chand Bairwa and Health Minister Jawahar Singh Bedham countered that a six‑member committee led by Commissioner Iqbal Khan had already been formed to probe the blaze and assess emergency preparedness. “The Chief Minister and all of us came here last night and the Chief Minister has formed a committee to investigate the cause,” Bairwa said. Bedham added that they had immediately met the families after the fire and that the government is committed to relief.
The state Congress president, Govind Singh Dotasra, slammed the government for repeated negligence in public health, pointing to fires and expired medicines as ongoing hazards. “People are dying because of government negligence. The government is insensitive and has completely failed,” he said.
Residents and patient groups are calling for accountability, compensation, and stronger fire‑safety measures in Rajasthan hospitals. The six‑member committee will review the cause of the trauma centre blaze, evaluate safety protocols, and propose steps to prevent a repeat tragedy.
