In the run‑up to Bihar’s assembly elections, women from Bagaha’s JEEViKA programme are making clear who they trust to lead them forward.
These women—often called “JEEViKA Didis”—speak openly about their support for Chief Minister Nitish Kumar. They say the current government has kept their homes safer and has let them earn and move freely. “We trust Nitish more than Tejashwi,” says long‑time member Manju Devi. “We’ve seen what promises turn into. Even Lalu promised a lot, but ended up with chaotic rule again.”
They echo the same confidence in the state leader’s track record. “No, I don’t trust Tejashwi,” says Nirmala Devi. “Nitish keeps us safe.”
The benefits of the JEEViKA programme are hard to ignore for many of the women. Ramwati Devi notes that she has received rations, cooking oil, and other government aid. Because of the self‑help groups, she now earns a living. “We’re independent now,” she says. Bindu Devi, who joined this year, got a ₹10,000 stipend from the scheme. “Both PM Modi and CM Nitish have helped us. That’s why we’ll vote for them.”
Several Didis point out that promises made by Tejashwi Yadav and his party lack credibility. “Under Nitish’s government we see real benefits,” says one woman. “Why would we trust someone who hasn’t done anything yet?”
Usha, Anita, and Rambha Devi also highlight the support they received—money, jobs, and even free electricity. They say, collectively: “We are standing with Nitish and Modi. Tejashwi hasn’t delivered anything so far.”
Now, in Bagaha, the women’s voices are loud and clear: they want Nitish Kumar to keep steering the state and to continue the work of the JEEViKA programme. They see it as the safest bet for families, especially their children, and for women looking to rebuild their lives.
