Teachers in Jharkhand Protest on Teacher’s Day Over Unpaid Salaries and Unfulfilled Promises
While teachers across India are being honored on Teacher’s Day, thousands of teachers in Jharkhand are protesting to demand their rights. These educators, many of whom haven’t received regular or adequate salaries, gathered in front of the Raj Bhavan in Ranchi to highlight their struggle.
The teachers are part of the Vittarahit (unfunded) Shikshak Sangharsh Morcha Mahasangh, a group fighting for their long-standing demands. They are raising their voices against the state government’s neglect and urging quick action on key issues.
Their main demands include approval of a proposal to increase grant-in-aid by 75% and immediate action on an important letter from the Department of Personnel, Administrative Reforms, and Official Language. This letter was sent to the Department of School Education and Literacy, but the teachers say no steps have been taken so far.
Raghunath Singh, the General Secretary of the Mahasangh, criticized the government, saying, “While top leaders like the President, Prime Minister, and Chief Ministers are celebrating Teacher’s Day, teachers in Jharkhand are forced to protest on the streets. Our demands have been ignored for the past five years. We want the government to approve the 75% grant-in-aid hike and give us the status of state government employees.”
Similarly, Arvind Singh, Secretary of the Vittarahit Shikshak Mandal, expressed disappointment, saying, “It’s ironic that on Teacher’s Day, we have to protest because our issues are still unresolved. We are fighting for the approval of the aid hike and recognition as state employees.”
The teachers warned that their future remains uncertain due to government inaction. Despite working with limited resources, these teachers continue to educate students. They also said if the government ignores their demands, their protest will escalate into an indefinite strike.
“This protest today is just the beginning. If our issues are not addressed soon, we will launch a continuous, indefinite agitation,” Singh added.
The teachers’ protest highlights the struggles of educators working in unfunded institutions across Jharkhand. They are calling on the government to act quickly to improve their conditions and give them the recognition they deserve.
