Srinagar’s Jammu and Kashmir cabinet, under Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, gears up for a key meeting on Tuesday. Officials expect the group to tackle pressing matters and push for the Lieutenant Governor to call the Legislative Assembly’s autumn session soon.
The push comes from the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act of 2019, which requires no more than six months between the end of one session and the start of the next. The last assembly sitting wrapped up on April 29, so the next one needs to kick off by October 28 to stay on track.
Statehood and reservation issues could steal the spotlight in the upcoming Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly debates. In the previous session, three resolutions calling for statehood restoration fizzled out amid chaos sparked by the National Conference. Their members had demanded an adjournment motion over the rejected Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025, leading to major disruptions.
Reservation policies also heated up last time, with opposition leader Sajad Gani Lone putting the government on the defensive. Lawmakers might also dive into the arrest of Doda MLA Mehraj Malik under the Public Safety Act (PSA), adding more tension to the mix.
For context, the 90-seat Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly splits between 47 members from the Kashmir Valley and 43 from the Jammu region. The National Conference holds the largest bloc with 42 seats, followed by the BJP with 29, Congress with six, and smaller shares for the Peoples Democratic Party (three), Awami Ittehad Party (one), Peoples Conference (one), CPI(M) (one), and Aam Aadmi Party (one). Six independents round it out.
Omar Abdullah’s National Conference government counts on support from all six Congress members, five independents, and the CPI(M) to keep things steady.
