Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha shared his deep sorrow on Monday over the death of Gulam Jeelani Pandit, the former Director General of Police (DGP) for the region. Pandit, who was 92, passed away on Sunday after a life dedicated to public service.
In a heartfelt message, Sinha said he was saddened by the news of Pandit’s passing. “He will always be remembered for his devotion to duty and service to the nation,” Sinha noted. He added that his thoughts and prayers go out to Pandit’s family and friends during this tough time, wishing peace for the departed soul.
Pandit was born on February 22, 1933, and took charge as the fourth DGP of the Jammu and Kashmir Police on May 21, 1987. For context, the first DGP was Peer Ghulam Hassan Shah, who led the force from May 25, 1982, to January 16, 1985. Pandit served until December 20, 1989, steering the police through a challenging period of political and social unrest in the region.
Colleagues and admirers recall Pandit as a true gentleman who commanded respect from every rank in his long career. Current DGP Nalin Prabhat, the 17th head of the Jammu and Kashmir Police, joined all ranks in mourning the loss. The force offered sincere condolences and prayers to support Pandit’s family.
Officers praised Pandit as a leader full of honesty and humility, someone who inspired generations of police personnel. He held the distinction of being the last Kashmir-origin DGP until Kuldeep Khoda took the role 18 years later, when non-local officers had led the force in the interim.
Pandit leaves behind his wife, a son, and two daughters. His funeral prayers took place at Jamalatta in downtown Srinagar, drawing mourners to honor his legacy in J&K police history.
