Jammu and Kashmir’s Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha has called for the next session of the legislative assembly to kick off on October 23, 2025, in Srinagar. The move comes straight from a fresh notification, setting the meeting for 10 a.m. and urging all members to show up as required by the assembly’s rules.
Sinha, acting under the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act of 2019, made the announcement on Saturday. It’s a key step to keep things on track— the law demands no more than six months between the end of one session and the start of the next. The assembly’s last gathering wrapped up on April 29, 2025, when lawmakers united to condemn a brutal terror attack in Pahalgam. That strike, blamed on Pakistan-backed Lashkar-e-Taiba militants, claimed the lives of 26 civilians.
This upcoming session marks the third for the union territory’s brand-new assembly, formed after the region’s reorganization. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah’s cabinet had pushed for it to begin even earlier, on October 13, but the lieutenant governor set the date as October 23.
Watch for heated debates on big issues like restoring statehood to Jammu and Kashmir and tackling reservation policies. In the previous session, three resolutions pushing for statehood fell apart amid chaos from the National Conference party. Tensions boiled over after lawmakers failed to pass an adjournment motion on the Waqf (Amendment) Bill of 2025.
Reservation matters kept popping up too, and expect more talk on the recent arrest of MLA Mehraj Malik. Plus, problems blocking fruit trucks on the vital Srinagar-Jammu highway could spark fresh discussions. As Jammu and Kashmir navigates its political landscape, these talks might shape the territory’s future under the Reorganisation Act.
