In a quiet ceremony in Elista, the capital of Russia’s Kalmykia, Jammu and Kashmir’s Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha paid respect at the Geden Sheddup Choikorling monastery. The monastery houses sacred relics of Lord Buddha that were brought from India and kept there for a week‑long exhibition.
Sinha, who is on a week‑long visit to Kalmykia, said he was grateful to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for sending him on this spiritual mission. He prayed that Buddha’s blessings would strengthen the bond between people of both regions.
During his arrival, Sinha highlighted his plans to meet Kalmykia’s Head, Batu Sergeyevich Khasikov, the region’s Buddhist leaders, and local monks. He also wished to explore the monastery’s history and discuss the significance of the relics with visitors.
The trip comes after a long tradition of Buddhist heritage in Jammu and Kashmir. The state hosts several important sites, such as the ancient ruins of Harwan and Ushkur, where 7th‑ to 8th‑century Buddha heads were found. Other notable sites include Ambaran near Akhnoor, the ruins of Parihaspur built by King Lalitaditya, the Alchi Monastery along the Indus River, and the Jayendra Vihara monastery near Baramulla, once visited by the Chinese monk Hiuen Tsang.
These places have played key roles in the spread of Buddhism across the region, offering a glimpse into the region’s rich spiritual past.
