JNUSU poll: Left sweeps all 4 seats, Aditi Mishra elected president

The Left alliance won big in the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union (JNUSU) elections held on November 4. Aditi Mishra, a Left candidate, took the presidency with 1,861 votes, beating ABVP’s Vikas Patel who got 1,447 votes – a margin of 449 votes.

For the Vice‑President spot, Kizhakoot Gopika Babu of the Left secured 3,101 votes, while ABVP’s Tanya Kumari received 1,787. The General‑Secretary race was tight, with Left’s Sunil Yadav winning by just 24 votes (2,005 to 1,981). Danish Ali, also a Left member, won the Joint‑Secretary post with 2,083 votes, beating ABVP’s Anuj Damara who had 1,797.

The alliance of the All India Students’ Association, Students’ Federation of India and Democratic Students’ Federation swept all four central panel seats, marking a reversal of last year when the ABVP captured a single seat. The National Students’ Union of India, backed by the Congress, ran candidates too but did not make a strong showing.

There were 9,043 students eligible to vote and the turnout was 67 %, a slight dip from 70 % in the previous election. Voting took place at eight university polling centres, starting at 9 a.m. in two shifts – the first to 1 p.m. and the second from 2:30 p.m.

Campaigners brought up both campus concerns and national matters. ABVP highlighted research fellowships, fair hostel allocation, expanded Wi‑Fi, and a stronger academic environment. The Left’s platform focused on student rights, free education, and broader participation in university governance.
