Tripura’s political mood has taken a sharp turn, with the Trinamool Congress (TMC) accusing the BJP government of turning the state into a “theatre of terror.”
A six‑person TMC delegation arrived in Agartala on Wednesday, following an overnight attack on the party’s headquarters by alleged BJP supporters.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said she might travel to Tripura if needed, explaining that the delegation could not even hire pre‑paid taxis and had to walk into the city.
The delegation — Minister Birbaha Hansda, MPs Sushmita Dev, Pratima Mondal and Saayoni Ghosh, and spokespersons Kunal Ghosh and Sudip Raha — met Tripura’s Director General of Police, Anurag, demanding security for TMC members and an investigation into the recent attacks.
Ghosh urged the DGP to act against the BJP‑aligned violence, noting that former Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb and other BJP leaders routinely travel across West Bengal with full logistical support while TMC workers report being denied cars and hotel rooms in Tripura.
“The state has become a ‘jungle raj,’ and political violence is now a tool of governance, not an exception,” Ghosh said. He added that TMC workers were not involved in the assault on BJP MP Khagen Murmu in North Bengal.
Ghosh criticized the BJP for blocking central funds to programs such as MGNREGA and housing schemes, which he said deprived people of their rights.
Saayoni Ghosh echoed the accusations, describing Tuesday’s vandalism of the TMC office as evidence of the BJP’s deliberate campaign to silence opposition voices.
Sushmita Dev called the attack part of a wider assault on democratic space, stating that the TMC was founded to fight authoritarianism and would continue to do so when democracy is threatened.
The delegation also requested a meeting with Tripura Governor Indra‑Sena Reddy Nallu to brief him on the state’s deteriorating law‑and‑order situation.
Earlier, TMC officials were denied the use of hired vehicles at Agartala’s airport. After three hours of protest, police finally provided transport and security escorts for the party’s journey to the city and headquarters.
BJP spokesperson Nabendu Bhattacharjee denied a full‑scale attack, claiming only a few TMC flags were removed outside the office. He counter‑accused the TMC of causing chaos in West Bengal and insisted that constitutional machinery has broken down there instead.
The clash highlights growing tensions in Tripura, where the BJP’s hardline tactics and alleged political violence are drawing harsh criticism from the opposition.
The outcome of the TMC’s request for a meeting with the governor and the response from Tripura’s police will be closely watched.
