The Indian government has approved the appointment of Justice M. Sundar as the new Chief Justice of the Manipur High Court. This decision follows a recommendation from the Supreme Court Collegium and comes as the current Chief Justice, Justice Kempaiah Somashekar, retires on September 14, 2025.
Union Minister of State for Law and Justice Arjun Ram Meghwal shared the news on X (formerly Twitter). He said the President of India, after consulting the Chief Justice of India, will appoint Justice Sundar from the Madras High Court to the role. The appointment takes effect once he assumes charge.
The Supreme Court Collegium made this recommendation during a meeting on Thursday. Justice Sundar, who hails from the Madras High Court, brings a strong background in law to the position.
Born on July 19, 1966, in Chennai, Justice Sundar completed his law degree from Madras Law College as part of the first five-year integrated course. He started practicing as an advocate in 1989 and focused mainly on civil cases at the Madras High Court. From 2003 to 2006, he served as Standing Counsel for the Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board. He became a permanent judge of the Madras High Court on October 5, 2016.
In related updates from the Collegium’s resolution on September 11, Justice Soumen Sen from the Calcutta High Court has been recommended as Chief Justice of the Meghalaya High Court. Meanwhile, Justice Pavankumar B. Bajanthri, originally from the Karnataka High Court and currently the Acting Chief Justice of the Patna High Court, is set to become its regular Chief Justice.
This move ensures smooth leadership transitions in key high courts across India, highlighting the ongoing efforts to strengthen the judiciary.
